July TBR and Currently Reading

Welcome to my July TBR (To Be Read) pile, almost midway through June. I’ve kind of gone back and forth on whether I want to continue with TBR lists since lately I’ve been a mood reader to the max. I mean, I was supposed to be participating in the #becausedragonsRAT and then I dropped both books I was loving and started something new. Oops.

U N F I N I S H E D   J U N E   R E A D S

The Weird Fiction Review #8 | So far I’m enjoying this collection. It has some ups and downs, which is kind of to be expected with these types of bind ups.

Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm by Philip Pullman | I must finish this book this summer. I started it in 2016 and never finished all the stories. They’re interesting and I enjoy learning about the Grimm fairy tales, but then I put down the book and never pick it up again. I think August I will work on reading books I’ve held onto for years and never finished.

Total Cat Mojo by Jackson Galaxy | One of my cats was peeing on everything I love, so I’ve been trying to figure out why. I ended up going to the vet and she helped us with some suggestions, but this book has been super helpful in general.

R E A D A T H O N   P L A N S

Emperor Mage (#3) by Tamora Pierce | I’ve been slowly making my way through all of Tamora Pierce’s novels. The Immortals was my absolute favorite series as a kid, but as an adult this series is getting a little weird. I’m about a third of the way through this book and Daine and Numair’s relationship is getting a little swampy.

Amulet Vol. 1 by Kazu Kabuishi | I already finished this and it was decent.

Kiki’s Delivery Service by Eiko Kadono | I also finished this and loved it.

Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente | This book is SO GOOD and I just put it down for no reason during the readathon. I’m a failure, but whatever.

The Martian by Andy Weir | I’ve been wanting to read this damn book since I saw the movie in theaters ages ago. Wow, I literally just looked it up and apparently the movie came out in 2015. Is this what it feels like to get older? Woof.

I also want to read more graphic novels this month. I keep buying them because I love graphic novels and then I just save them for no reason. I’m just too excited to read everything ever!

#becausedragonsrat TBR

The #becausedragonsRAT is a fantasy readathon that will take place July 1st through 7th this year. I’m going to try to actually participate in this one because I am actually excited about all these books and I shouldn’t have any crazy plans that week. (edit: I just checked and I lied, I’m always busy in the summer on weekends. ‘Tis adulthood.) On to the challenges!

Challenge #1: Read a fantasy with red on the cover.

Challenge #3: Read a fantasy with a strong friendship.

For these challenges I chose Kiki’s Delivery Service by Eiko Kadono and translated by Lynne E. Riggs. I had no idea this was a book before I found it at the library book sale a couple months ago, but from the reviews on Goodreads it seems to be rare to find in the States. As for the challenges, it does have red on the cover and features a friendship between Kiki and her cat Jiji. I figured a book aimed towards children would be a perfect easy read for a readathon, and I’m interested to see how it is different from the movie.

Challenge #2: Read a fantasy based on a mythology you’re unfamiliar with.

Challenge #4: Read the last fantasy book you acquired.

I decided to go with Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente for these two challenges. I’m not hugely familiar with Russian folklore besides the figure Baba Yaga. I also just bought this book last weekend specifically for this challenge because I realized I was lacking in books based on mythology in general. See my most recent haul post if you’re interested.

Challenge #5: Read a fantasy with dragons!

As I was looking for dragon books on my shelves, I realized I am severely lacking in dragon books. Recommendations are welcome, if you have any favorites. I ended up choosing Emperor Mage by Tamora Pierce, the 3rd book in The Immortals series. I’m in the midst of a Tortall re-read and just happened to be on this series, which works perfectly. I won’t spoil anything, but our main protagonist, Daine, ends up befriending a dragon.

And there we have it! That is my TBR for the next readathon I am participating in. I think I can tackle these books within a week’s span, but we shall see. Let me know if you’ve read any of these or if you are interested in any of them, and I was serious about those dragon recs!

PSA: This TBR list is subject to change drastically. This is my first month setting a TBR for myself and who knows how it will go.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne | (ebook, not pictured) This one I have already read and will review it in my wrap up later this month! I read it because of Chelsea from Chelseadollingreads on BookTube, check her out.

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green | I started this one a few days ago. I’m not a big fan of YA comtemporary novels, but thought I would make an exception for the new John Green. I was a huge vlogbrothers fan back in the day, and loved his books in high school. I bought it right when it came out, so I need to read it before it’s no longer relevant.

The Diviners by Libba Bray | I started this one last month on audiobook, I just happen to have a physical copy as well. It’s absolutely fantastic, it just takes me a while to finish audiobooks sometimes. Last I checked, I have 4 hours left and I need to just finish it and get to the next one.

The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett | This one may be replaced with any fantasy book, I’ve been in a fantasy mood lately. This one in particular is part of the Tiffany Aching series, which is Pratchett’s YA Discworld books. This is the book I read in high school that started my interested in Pratchett.

Pansy by Andrea Gibson | I bought this book a few months ago when Andrea Gibson was going to be in my city, but I never got to make it to her book signing. I’m familiar with her spoken word on Youtube, but I’ve never picked up any of her collections before and I’ve been in a poetry mood lately.

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore | I just bought this book as a birthday gift to myself last month (haul blog post coming soon). I’m obsessed with McLemore and am so excited to read this one. I need more magical realism recommendations because I can’t get enough. I know it’s not for everyone, but flowery words are my jam. McLemore writes a lot about family and love and lgbtq+ characters and it’s always beautiful. I actually don’t know what this one is about, but that’s not a big deal to me.

Deadly Class (#1-4) by Rick Remender | Honestly, I don’t know much about this series. My best friend let me borrow all her Rick Remender graphic novels and I’ve only read Strange Girl so far. I know this one is about an assassin high school, so we’ll see how it goes.

I N   C O N C L U S I O N

Let’s see how this month goes! After all that, I’m already thinking I may DNF Turtles and skip to something I’m more excited about reading. After my Tamora Pierce month I just want to read more fantasy.
